Hugo's perfect day

Sun 05 March 2017, 21:30|Tottenham Hotspur

An opportunity grasped, three points taken, a Club record and 200 appearances - no wonder Hugo Lloris was all smiles after Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Everton.

Let’s deal with the business of the day first as another two goals from Harry Kane - taking him to 19 in the Premier League and another single from Dele Alli - he’s up to 13 - secured the victory against in-form Everton.

Ronald Koeman’s men arrived at the Lane unbeaten in nine but were put to the sword especially in the first half and we were in control at 2-0 up when Romelu Lukaku scored out of nothing to reduce arrears on 81 minutes. We looked safe again when Dele scored in the 92nd minute for 3-1 only for Everton to reply immediately after our goal, seconds before the final whistle.

Below: Hugo speaks to Spurs TV after the win against Everton

“At the end it’s a great feeling to get the three points,” said skipper Hugo. “We didn’t miss the opportunity - Arsenal and Manchester United dropped points and it was important to make the difference and that’s a good feeling.

“Then the performance…until the Lukaku goal we put together a great performance then at 2-1, it was a typical Premier League game - anything could happen.

“At 3-1 we’re not allowed switch off like we did for their free-kick (to make it 3-2 in the 93rd minute) but finally it was three points and that was our target. Now we can rest with a good feeling.”

The win made it nine on the trot in the Premier League and that’s a Club record in the Premier League era, which stretches back to the 1992-93 season. The previous best of eight was put together between March-August, 2009. “That’s very positive for the team,” reflected Hugo.

Finally, the big number of the day, Hugo’s 200th appearance for us in all competitions since his debut back in September, 2012.

“It’s a good number,” he said. “I said before the game that the result was more important than my 200th appearance for Tottenham but maybe now I can open a bottle of champagne and share it with my family!”
