Hard work ahead for proud Nabil

Nabil Bentaleb has fond recollections of his Spurs debut – and he’s now determined to build on his breakthrough season at the top level.

The hard-working 19-year-old ended the domestic campaign with 20 senior appearances in all competitions to his name after his elevation into the first team picture last December.

A product of our Development Squad, the young midfielder also earned his first full cap for Algeria and a place in his country’s provisional squad for next month’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

And while he didn’t need much prompting when the subject of his maiden Premier League appearance – a half-time introduction off the bench in a 3-2 win at Southampton – was raised, the focus of his attention swiftly moved to what lies ahead.

“December 22, Southampton away – I remember it clearly,” interjected Nabil when even the slightest mention of his debut was broached.

“It felt strange and to be honest I didn’t think I was going to go on, but suddenly I was told to take my training shirt off and after that it just went so quickly. A few seconds later I was on the pitch.

“Once I got out there I didn’t think about anything but football and what I had to do.

“I was proud to make my debut and then to go on and continue in the first team. I also remember hitting the bar against Crystal Palace at home. That’s all in the past now, though, and I have to keep working hard for next season.

“I have to work on my right foot shots and I’m really dedicated to improving. I will continue to work hard and give everything in training.”
