One half of what many feel is an under-rated or unsung full-back pairing in the double team, Peter Baker's contribution to the side was seen by his peers as immeasurable.

Plucked from Enfield on amateur terms in 1949, Baker joined full-time in 1952 and went on to spend 13 years at the club before taking a change of career path to South Africa.

Baker actually made his debut alongside the great Bill Nicholson in his early career at the Lane in 1953 and setted in as understudy to Sir Alf Ramsey, slotting in when Ramsey was away on England duty.

The arrival of Maurice Norman, then a right-back, appeared to threaten his place when it was time to take over from Ramsey but injury to Norman in the 1956-57 campaign opened the door and he grabbed his chance.

He was firmly established as right-back when Nicholson took over the managerial reigns in 1958 and he was almost immovable through the success of the early 1960s - Norman went on to earn his Spurs at centre-half.

The ultimate professional, Baker teamed up with Danny Blanchflower down the right flank of that great double team. Fast and fearless in the tackle, Baker's simple passing game, usually kick-starting attacks via Blanchflower, was a key part of that great side.

He stayed in the side until the arrival of Cyril Knowles and in May 1965, with 342 games in all competitions under his belt, he emigrated to South Africa, where he played and managed Durban United and Addington of Durban before opening up his own business.
