A classic 'old-fashioned' centre-forward, Bobby Smith was top-scorer in the great double season of 1960-61 before forming one of the most feared strike partnerships in club football with Jimmy Greaves.
Big and bustling, tough and uncompromising, Smith was signed from Chelsea for £16,000 in December 1955 with us one place off the foot of the table and scored the goals to help stave off the threat of relegation.
He then went on to spearhead the attack in the glory, glory years.
Smith scored 36 league goals in 1957-58 to equal Ted Harper's record of 1930-31 and by August of 1960 he had overtaken George Hunt's aggregate of league goals for the club.
He won his first England cap against Northern Ireland in October 1960 and went on to score 13 goals in 15 internationals.
Top-scorer in the double season - he scored in the FA Cup Final - he was then joined by all-time great marksman Greaves as the FA Cup followed in 1962 and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1963.
Smith loved nothing more than a battle and his presence alone often gave Spurs a psychological advantage but take nothing away from his skill and deftness of footwork.
After scoring 176 goals in 271 league games, Smith moved to Brighton in May 1964 where his 18 goals helped clinch the Fourth Division title, before moving to Hastings and Banbury.
He later had a number of driving and labouring jobs but was increasingly troubled by the effects of several old injuries, a painful legacy of his wholehearted style of play.
