Glenn struts his stuff

Oxygen and the club doctor were on standby at Spurs Lodge on Tuesday afternoon as Glenn and the training ground staff took on a Spurs Academy side in an attempt to put the young colts in their place.

Under the management of Theo Foley, who spent the afternoon swaggering around with 'Boss' etched on his coat and tugging on a big fat cigar to look the part, the staff side donned our change strip and, to be frank, did not appear to pose much of a threat to the young thrusters.

But a few of the staffers rolled back the years and Glenn, pictured giving the slip to England youth international Ben Bowditch, dictated midfield proceedings for the first 15 minutes of a scheduled 40 minute encounter before breathing rather heavily for the remainder.

Jimmy Neighbour still looked the part in a right midfield role, Chris Hughton was nimble as ever patrolling the left flank, but the undounted stars of the staff side was the central defensive pairing of Academy director Peter Suddaby and reserve team boss Colin Calderwood.

The duo repelled all the likes of under-19 regulars John Sutton, Dean Marney and Bowditch launched at them and provided a solid base for a flagging team.

Not having much in the way of ex-strikers on the staff, Hans Segers and masseur Paul Robert did the front running - and did not prove much of a threat to young keeper Rob Burch.

It was goalless at the break and the staff side elected to bring in the goalposts to conserve energy. Another ploy was to gradually and sneekily strengthen the team. By the end of normal time, some 14 players were on the pitch (including Pat Jennings) for the staff. But there was still no breakthough - although credit must be given to John Gorman for a couple of dazzling pieces of skill.

Golden Goal came into play, but the game was still at stalemate until, after ten minutes of added time, Dave Galbraith broke down the left and fired a fine effort past fitness coach Kunle Odetoyinbo in goal.
