Gazza clinched it for Clem

Thu 11 January 2001, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Stephen Clemence prepares to face his childhood hero Paul Gascoigne admitting: "He made up my mind to support Spurs."

The Lane legend is scheduled to return for Everton in time for our visit to Goodison Park in the Premiership on Saturday.

Gazza has been sidelined since hobbling out of the Toffees encounter against Aston Villa in November. He eventually needed surgery on a hernia problem.

Spurs certainly saw the best of Gazza, not least 10 years ago when post-World Cup hysteria was at its height and his heroics took us to the FA Cup Final. Clemence, just 10 when Gazza arrived at the Lane, saw his hero at close quarters.

"I remember when we first moved down I still liked Liverpool," said the 22-year-old. "That was only natural after my dad’s time at the club.

"But as soon as Gazza signed I was hooked on Spurs. It really was as simple as that.

"I just loved the way he played and some of the skills he produced were unbelievable.

"Obviously with my dad’s connections at the club I was often at training and I always remember he was great to be around. He was great fun and had time for everyone.

"I was only 12 or 13 at the time and he had time to talk to me. He didn’t have to do that but that was the type of person he was."

Clemence is likely to line-up against Gazza as he continues his new role at left wing-back in a five-man defence.

And he warned: "Gazza still has plenty to offer. He is one of those players who can produce a moment of magic that can win any game.

"It will be a tough one for us. It was great to finally win away at Orient last week but if we can manage to get a result at Goodison it will really set us up nicely."
