Gary Mabbutt ‘shoots a hoop’ to officially open new sports hall

Gary Mabbutt was greeted by pupils, staff and governors at Enfield Grammar where the Spurs legend was invited to officially open the academy school's new state-of-the-art sports hall.

A fitting way to mark the opening rather than a typical ribbon cutting ceremony, the former skipper declared the new £1million sports hall open by ‘shooting a hoop’ using the brand new basketball facilities in the hall.

Enfield Grammar is one of the oldest schools in the local area and has over 1,000 students.

The new sports hall, funded by the Education Funding Agency, has replaced out-dated facilities and is the newest building at the school in over 20 years.

Taking just over six months to complete, the facilities will be made available to pupils and the local community.

The Club has made a commitment to provide over 7,000 hours per year of high quality sport, health and education related activities to local residents alongside partners Enfield Council and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. Through the Academy programme, the Club works with a majority of local schools including Enfield Grammar, and local football clubs enabling young people of all ages from across the borough to have access to the training centre where they have been able to make use of the world class facilities.

Gary Mabbutt said: “It is great to have been invited to attend and officially open Enfield Grammar’s new sports hall and to see one of our local schools investing in their facilities for the of benefit pupils and the community.

"Sport means a lot to young people in the community - this is evident when we have welcomed a majority of them to our training centre to use the facilities. I hope that the pupils at Enfield Grammar make the most of their new sports hall and enjoy playing a wide range of sporting activities there.” 

John Kerr, Headmaster at Enfield Grammar said: “To have a Spurs legend opening our new £1million sports hall really made the day. The boys were totally engaged with his speech and to top it all he ‘sunk the basket’ to officially open the sports hall at Enfield Grammar with ease - class!”
