Federico Fazio felt the team gave a good account of themselves in the 1-1 draw against Besiktas on Thursday night – but was ultimately left to rue the late penalty that cost us victory.
We defended resolutely for large parts of the second half with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris making a handful of crucial saves as we looked to protect the 1-0 lead given to us by Harry Kane.
But Demba Ba’s 89th minute spot kick, a consequence of Vlad Chiriches’ handball in the box, saw the Turkish visitors leave White Hart Lane with a share of the spoils – meaning both sides have now drawn their opening two Group C matches in the Europa League.
Asteras Tripolis, our next opponents in the competition on October 23, beat Partizan Belgrade 2-0 to go top of the early standings.
“It was a good performance, we did a good job, but I’m not happy with the result because we wanted to win,” said Argentine defender Federico after his third appearance in our colours.
“Harry was very good today, but so was all the team. We had a good attitude and it was only just before the end when we conceded the penalty that we slipped up.
“We now need to think about Sunday when we play against Southampton. We must try to win this game.”
