Club invited to Sydney for city’s celebrations of Culture and Sport

The Club is delighted to announce it will head Down Under for a friendly match with Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium on Saturday May 30, 2015, kick off 7.30pm local time/10.30am UK time.

We nave received an official invitation to visit one of the world’s most iconic cities from New South Wales Government and Destination New South Wales, as part of a week of sporting events and cultural activities taking place in Sydney.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Sydney FC will be part of a giant week on the Sydney sporting calendar and follow on from the opening game of the State of Origin rugby league series. It will also coincide with the annual Vivid Sydney light, music and sound festival, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people to Sydney Harbour.

The visit is the Club’s third to Australia, following on from previous trips in 1976 and 1985, and will give us the opportunity to engage with a large and growing fan base in the Asia-Pacific region, estimated at over 170 million.

Our Official Supporters group in Australia, Oz Spurs, is well established with branches across the country, including in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth.

Supporters will benefit from a range of hugely popular fan events including autograph signing opportunities with players, supporter evenings with Club legends and football coaching courses.

The team will travel to Sydney following the end of the 2014-15 Barclays Premier League campaign to face two-time A-League champions Sydney FC, who list Alessandro del Piero and Dwight Yorke amongst its former players.

“Our match against Sydney FC is sure to be hard-fought and entertaining, with the A-League becoming stronger every year and attracting some big name players, so we would like to thank the New South Wales Government and Destination New South Wales for the chance to visit your beautiful city.”

New South Wales’ Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Troy Grant, said: “Tottenham Hotspur has been an iconic football institution for over 130 years, and I am pleased to announce they will be playing exclusively in Sydney in just a few months.  Spurs will bring a squad of top class players to Sydney, and with Sydney FC in great form at the moment it will be a closely fought match.

“The game will be a must-see for all football fans, and will attract a huge crowd to Western Sydney. The event has been won for Sydney by the NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, and will provide a boost to the local visitor economy.

“This event is another example of the NSW Government’s commitment to building a world class calendar of events as we work towards achieving our goal of doubling overnight expenditure to the State by 2020.”
