Chris Waddle

A mercurial winger in the traditions of the club, Chris Waddle lit up the Lane in his 173 competitive games for Spurs.

Waddle wasn't snapped up professionally as a youngster - he famously worked in a sausage factory while playing non-league football - before Newcastle United signed him in 1980.

He made his debut just three months later and starred alongside Kevin Keegan and Peter Beardsley in the early 1980s. By 1984 he was United's star, made his full England debut in 1985 and made the big-money move to N17 in July 1985.

He immediately struck up an understanding with Glenn Hoddle and was a key part of David Pleat's wonderful 1986-87 team that finished third in the league, runners-up in the FA Cup and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.

He was particularly impressive in 1988-89 and that persuaded Marseille to splash out £4.5m for his services in 1989 - at that time, Waddle was the third most expensive player in the world behind Maradona and Ruud Gullit.

He repaid the French with some dazzling displays, not least in the 1991 European Cup Final, before returning to England and Sheffield Wednesday in 1992, where his displays in helping the Owls to the League and FA Cup Finals earned him the Footballer Writers Player of the Year award in 1993.

Went on to manage Burnley and play for Falkirk, Bradford City, Sunderland and, most recently, Worksop Town.
