Chivers honoured

Fri 01 December 2000, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Martin Chivers has received a surprise invitation from Swiss club Servette to join them at a celebration to honour the best 40 players to wear the club colours during the 20th century. The event takes place on December 10.

Long standing Spurs fans will remember that Martin had a two year spell at Servette when, in 1976, Terry Neill decided that he was surplus to requirements at Tottenham.

Martin recalls his time in Switzerland with affection. He notched 38 goals in his two seasons there, his last appearance being in the 1978 Swiss Cup Final victory over Grasshopper-Club Zurich.

Signed from Southampton in January, 1968, Martin scored 174 goals in 367 senior appearances for us. His tally of 22 European goals and 23 in the Football League Cup both remain as club records.

On returning from Switzerland he played League football for Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion until 1980. He has served on our matchday hospitality staff for a number of years now and also runs our Veterans team.
