Cambridge City 0-5 Spurs XI - report from Glass World Stadium

Our development squad finished pre-season in style with a 5-0 Spurs XI win against Cambridge City at Histon's Glass World Stadium on Wednesday night.

There were some spectacular goals on show in the squad's final preparation for Friday night's Barclays U21 Premier League opener against Chelsea at Aldershot's Recreation Ground.

Indeed, it was difficult to pick out the goal of the night but Ryan Fredericks' bolt from the blue from 35 yards probably just edged out a textbook full volley into the top corner from Cristian Ceballos.

We controlled possession for the most part but the home side from the Calor (Southern) League Premier Division - no doubt wanting to put on a show in manager Gary Roberts and central defender Lee Chaffey's Testimonial - did cause a scare or two in the first half.

City's work-rate was admirable and they created the first chance on four minutes when Lewis Wilson turned a cross on target from close range, only for Jonathan Miles to make a reaction save.

Ceballos had the next sight at goal after combining with Yago Falque, a left-foot drive to the near post from a tight angle turned away by Zac Barrett on 13 minutes.

Wilson found himself clean through on Miles on 17 minutes but the goalkeeper stood his ground, got his angles right and made the save.

As our grip tightened, chances started to arrive. Ceballos fired over, Kenny McEvoy's dart into the box caused mayhem and then Bentaleb fired just wide of the target on 23 minutes.

Two minutes later and it was 1-0 and a carbon-copy of Bentaleb's chance minutes earlier as Ruben Lameiras and Falque opened it up for the midfielder to thrash his drive across Barrett into the far corner.

Wilson had his next chance on 28 minutes, this time in the left channel, but his attempt at a precise finish was hit straight at Miles, who saved easily.

Falque scored a goal out of nothing to double the lead on 37 minutes. Picking the ball up centrally, he had time to set himself to shoot, and rifled into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

We made four changes for the second half with Lawrence Vigouroux, Alex McQueen, Darren McQueen and Aaron McEneff replacing Miles, Kevin Stewart, McEvoy and Bentaleb.

Ceballos had the first chance of the second half after Shaq Coulthirst won possession centrally and found him left of centre, the winger dribbled into the box but Barrett was out to block.

Fredericks made it 3-0 on 55 minutes with a stunning strike. Picking the ball up fully 35 yards out, he pulled the trigger and his effort sailed into the top corner.

Falque darted to the byline to set-up Coulthirst, who was denied by Chaffey back on the goalline.

It was one-way traffic now and Barrett did well to deny Falque on 74 minutes, a snapshot from 25 yards after a clever reverse pass from Lameiras found him in space.

The fourth goal wasn't long in arriving as McEneff won the ball centrally and sent Coulthirst away down the right. His cross found Falque, who tucked away in the six-yard box.

The fifth goal was a clinical strike from Ceballos, a first-time volley that arrowed into the top corner from 20 yards on 78 minutes.

The their credit, City mustered more energy in search of an equaliser, only to see Farrell's dipping volley tipped over by Vigouroux and then a goalbound effort from that corner by Chaffey that looked to be flying home until Vigouroux flew to his right to grasp it.
