Our Academy players have flown to Florida to take part in the IMG Cup for the second consecutive year.
After achieving a second place finish in 2013, we’ll be looking to make another big impact in the competition this time around.
We take on American outfit Baltimore Celtic (Wednesday, December 17), Mexican side Toluca (Thursday, December 18) and the USA Under-17 National Team (Saturday, December 20) in the first stage, with Under-18s Coach Kieran McKenna expecting a highly competitive campaign.
“Last year it was a really good experience for the boys,” he said. “The facilities were excellent, the level of competition was good and ultimately this sort of trip gives the boys more experience of playing in international tournaments, which we always look to get into their programme.
“The trip comes at a good time for us as it falls before a short Christmas break and concludes the first half of our season.
“We’ve taken a large number of scholars, plus Connor Ogilvie and Emmanuel Sonupe from the Development Squad, so we’re taking a full squad and, as always, everyone will be looking to play their part in what will hopefully be a successful tournament campaign.”
Squad: Voss, McDermott, Amos, Azzaoui, Carter-Vickers, Daly, Georgiou, Goddard, Harrison, Loft, Maghoma, Muscatt, Ogilvie, Owens, Paul, Ross, Sonupe, Stylianides, Walker-Peters, Walkes.
Elsewhere, following our Academy’s 4-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers in the third round of the FA Youth Cup last Monday, we have been drawn against either Rotherham United or Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fourth round. A date for the game will be confirmed in due course.
