In athe epic final that spanned matches both home and away with the nail-biting lottery of penalties which decided the outcome of the 1983/1984 UEFA Cup Final – and a Spurs victory. In the competition’s first final shoot-out, Tony Parks’ was the hero saving Arnor Gudjohnsen’s penalty to secure a Spurs victory over Anderlecht.
The first leg had ended all square at 1-1 but the Belgian side had looked set to retain the trophy when Alex Czerniatynski scored an hour into the second leg at White Hart Lane. But a late equaliser from Graham Roberts, the magnificent stand-in skipper for the suspended Steve Perryman, resulted in a 1-1 draw.
Extra time came and went and with no further goals, the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate. What followed was as dramatic as it gets ending in a memorable finale leaving Spurs to take the trophy home for the second time in the Club’s illustrious history.
