Dele, Eriksen and Vertonghen react to Chelsea win

Mon 02 April 2018, 10:59|Tottenham Hotspur

Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as we came back from a goal down to win at Chelsea on Easter Sunday.

Alvaro Morata nodded the Blues in front when Hugo Lloris got caught underneath a cross but, with Jan and Davinson Sanchez superb in defence, we came roaring back to claim our first win at Stamford Bridge in 28 years.

Christian Eriksen rocketed home the equaliser from long range on the stroke of half-time, Dele expertly controlled Eric Dier’s long ball forward and finished past Willy Caballero before the same player slid home in the wake of Heung-Min Son’s low shot being saved on what was the midfielder’s 100th Premier League appearance.

Here’s what the lads had to say to us when the dust had settled…

Dele

Feelings after the win
“It's great – it's always nice to win so I'm feeling good. We weren't concentrating on (the poor record at Stamford Bridge) going into the game. Every game is different, we knew if we performed well we've got quality players and we could win the game. It wasn't easy – obviously to go 1-0 down, we had to pick ourselves up from that and that strike from Chris just before half-time gave us real belief going into the second half.”

On Christian’s leveller

“It was crucial – it was a great strike. I don't think anyone was surprised that he put it in the top corner and it was a great result in the end. Of course it’s always nice to score, I’m happy to score two but I would have the same happiness if I didn’t score and we won anyway.”

On his second goal and our third
“Chris was angry at Sonny because he didn't give him the assist and I was angry at Sonny because he didn't square it, but he's in unbelievable form and nine times out of 10 he hits the back of the net there, so I don't blame him that he went for goal and I was happy to get the rebound and score.”

On the defensive display
“You never feel too comfortable when you're playing against a top side like this so we had to stay focused and switched on at the back. The back players defended really well throughout the whole game, obviously we were disappointed to concede the first goal but we defended very well. We were comfortable but we had to stay focused.”

On his 100th Premier League game
“It's flown by! I’m nearly 22 now – later this month – so it’s been a good 100 appearances.”

Christian Eriksen

Thoughts on the game
“I think everyone is very happy and very pleased at the way we played and getting three points at Stamford Bridge is something that hasn't happened for many years in a Spurs shirt, so of course it's good that we can change history.”

On his long-range goal and effort that was saved moments beforehand
“I wasn't always confident of scoring from that range but I was definitely going for it and trying to hit it. The first one was a bit of a warm-up shot and the second one – luckily I hit it very well and it went straight in.”

Jan Vertonghen

On the defensive performance
“I think we did very well. We had a lot of one-v-ones and dealt with those well. Davinson played well, but everyone at the back had a very good game really.”

Thoughts on the win
“It feels good. We’ve been close in recent years a couple of times so obviously to win here finally is a good feeling. I think we deserved the win because we had a great game. It feels very good to put the record right, especially as we’ve built up a bit of competition between the two teams in recent years and we should have won the home game this season, so it was like a little revenge.”

On going eight points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea
“We’ve got seven games left and we mustn’t give this away. We’re in a great position now and we have to keep it.”
